HWT has installed a new skid mounted water treatment plant designed to provide reliable treated water for cellar and bottling operations. The plant has a design capacity of 80 m³/day and has been installed on an existing concrete foundation.
Wherever practical, existing infrastructure and equipment have been incorporated into the new installation. Consequently, the treatment system provides an economical upgrade while introducing additional filtration, disinfection and process control.
The complete system is fully automated and has been designed to require minimal operator intervention.
Skid Mounted Water Treatment Plant Process
Water from the Theewaterskloof supply line is connected to new SBS-type storage tanks before being passed through the filtration system.
Firstly, the Theewaterskloof water is filtered through AFM (Activated Filter Media). This stage is provided primarily for the removal of suspended material and the reduction of turbidity.
Thereafter, the water is passed through GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) filtration. The GAC stage is included for colour removal and further improvement of the treated water quality.
Following filtration, the water is disinfected using the existing chlorine dioxide dosing equipment.
High-duty PVC pipework has been used throughout the installation, providing a robust and corrosion-resistant process piping system.
Separate Cellar and Bottling Plant Supplies
After the primary treatment process, the treated water is distributed to two separate pressure supply systems.
For the cellar water supply, an existing pressure pump is utilised. The pressurised water is subsequently passed through a bag filter, followed by UV disinfection, before being supplied for cellar use.
Similarly, water supplied to the new bottling plant is pressurised using an existing pump. Final polishing is then provided by bag filtration, followed by UV disinfection using existing equipment.
Therefore, both supply streams receive an additional filtration and disinfection barrier immediately before use.
Automated Water Treatment and Control
The existing control panel has been relocated and incorporated into the upgraded installation. In addition, a small dedicated control panel has been supplied for operation of the filtration and UV equipment.
The plant has been designed for fully automatic operation. As a result, routine operator involvement is kept to a minimum while the various treatment processes can be operated as an integrated system.
80 m³/day Water Treatment Capacity
The installation has been designed to treat up to 80 m³ of water per day.
By combining AFM filtration, GAC filtration, chlorine dioxide disinfection, bag filtration and UV disinfection, multiple treatment barriers have been incorporated into the system. Furthermore, existing pumps, disinfection equipment and infrastructure have been reused wherever practical.
The result is a compact skid mounted water treatment plant that integrates new and existing equipment into a single automated treatment system.
