Helipad sewage treatment plant in Franschhoek

Above Ground Polytank Wastewater Treatment Plant for Water Re-Use

HWT recently supplied an above ground polytank wastewater treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 50 kilolitres per day. The system provides reliable sewage treatment together with sustainable treated water re-use.

The compact plant design reduced civil construction requirements and simplified installation. In addition, the above ground configuration improved maintenance access and reduced installation time. As a result, the plant could be commissioned efficiently and economically.

Biological Treatment and Nutrient Removal

The treatment process includes the biological degradation of dissolved organic material and nitrogenous compounds. Microbial activity inside the aerated treatment tanks reduces the organic load and improves final effluent quality.

The process also includes pH stabilisation to maintain favourable biological conditions. Consequently, the plant can operate reliably under varying loading conditions.

Liquid chlorine disinfection forms the final treatment stage. This process reduces harmful microorganisms before the treated water is discharged or re-used. In addition, the system includes flow measurement equipment for accurate monitoring of treated water volumes.

Treated Water Re-Use Applications

The treated water from the plant supports several beneficial re-use applications, including:

  • Dust suppression
  • Irrigation
  • Toilet flushing

The design also allows for the safe disposal of excess treated water to an irrigation dam.

Water re-use helps reduce potable water consumption and lowers wastewater discharge volumes. Therefore, the plant supports both environmental sustainability and responsible water management practices.

Compliance with DWS General Limits

The wastewater treatment plant produces treated water that complies with IPW requirements and the General Limit requirements of the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

Reliable treatment performance remains essential for developments that require environmentally responsible wastewater management. Therefore, HWT Water Treatment continues to supply compact sewage treatment systems for estates, labour camps, lodges, industrial facilities and remote developments throughout Southern Africa.

Each plant is designed according to the required flow rate, discharge objectives and treated water re-use requirements of the project.
