Reliable Drinking Water for a Remote Labour Camp

A containerised water treatment plant was recently supplied by HWT to a labour camp situated along the Senqu River in Lesotho. The plant was designed to provide a dependable source of treated potable water for personnel working in a remote environment where reliable infrastructure was limited.

The treatment system was supplied as a compact containerised solution so that transport, installation and commissioning could be simplified. Furthermore, the modular design allowed the plant to be rapidly deployed with minimal site preparation. As a result, treated water could be made available to the camp within a short period of time.

Containerised Water Treatment Plant Designed for Harsh Conditions

The raw water source for the project was taken from the Senqu River. Because river water quality can vary considerably due to seasonal changes, rainfall events and suspended solids, a robust treatment process was required. Consequently, a multi-stage treatment system was incorporated into the design.

The plant was engineered with a treatment capacity of 90 kilolitres per day. This capacity was selected to ensure that the daily potable water demand of the labour camp could be comfortably accommodated.

The treatment process includes:

  • Flocculation
  • Filtration
  • Disinfection

During the flocculation stage, suspended particles are destabilised and grouped together into larger flocs. Thereafter, the water is passed through a filtration process where fine solids and turbidity are removed. Finally, disinfection is carried out to ensure that harmful microorganisms are eliminated before the water is distributed for consumption.

Compact and Efficient Water Treatment Solution

The containerised configuration offers several important advantages. Firstly, all treatment components are housed within a secure steel container, thereby protecting the equipment from harsh weather conditions and unauthorised access. In addition, the compact footprint allows the plant to be installed in locations where space may be limited.

Operational efficiency was also prioritised during the design process. Therefore, the system was configured to allow straightforward operation and routine maintenance. This helps to ensure long-term reliability and consistent treated water quality.

Water Treatment Solutions for Remote Locations

Containerised water treatment systems are supplied for remote camps, mining operations, construction sites, rural developments and industrial facilities throughout Southern Africa. Each plant is designed according to the specific raw water quality and site requirements of the project.

With more than 30 years of experience in the water treatment industry, reliable and practical treatment solutions continue to be delivered for challenging environments where dependable potable water is essential.
