Sicily Village Sewage Treatment Plant

The Sicily Village Sewage Treatment Plant was designed and supplied by HWT to provide reliable and efficient wastewater treatment for a residential development. The plant has been engineered to treat 50 m³ of sewage per day while producing high-quality treated water that complies with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) General Limit for discharge and reuse.

The installation has been designed as a compact, fully automated system requiring minimal operator intervention. Furthermore, critical equipment has been supplied in a duty/duty standby configuration, thereby ensuring high reliability and continuous operation.

Sicily Village Sewage Treatment Plant Process

Raw sewage is collected in a raw sewage collection sump, which forms part of the overall scope of supply. From there, the wastewater is pumped to the treatment plant where the biological treatment process begins.

The treatment system has been constructed within three modified 6-metre shipping containers, providing a compact and transportable solution that can be installed with minimal site disruption. As a result, installation times are reduced while future maintenance remains straightforward.

Initially, inert and settleable solids are removed from the wastewater. Thereafter, advanced biological treatment processes are used to remove both organic pollutants and dissolved nitrogen compounds, ensuring excellent treatment performance.

Finally, the treated effluent is disinfected before passing through a flow measurement system, where the final treated water volume can be accurately monitored.

Water Reuse Benefits

Because the treated water complies with the DWS General Limit, it can safely be reused for a variety of non-potable applications. Consequently, valuable potable water resources can be conserved while operating costs are reduced.

Typical reuse applications include:

  • Irrigation of landscaped areas
  • Toilet flushing
  • Dust suppression
  • Fire control water
  • Safe discharge to the environment where appropriate

These reuse opportunities contribute to improved water sustainability while reducing the demand placed on municipal water supplies.

Fully Automated Containerised Sewage Treatment

The Sicily Village installation has been designed for dependable long-term operation. Therefore, the plant operates automatically with minimal operator involvement while maintaining consistent treatment performance.

In addition, all major mechanical equipment has been installed in a duty/duty standby arrangement. This design philosophy improves operational reliability by ensuring that standby equipment is immediately available should maintenance be required.

The use of modified shipping containers also provides several practical advantages. Civil construction requirements are reduced, transportation is simplified, and future relocation remains possible if site requirements change.
